A written exerpt from my essay, Zeitgeist of today, in which i discussed the current spirit of the times in fashion:
“Sometime around the beginning of 2017, Americans became obsessed with the Danish concept of “hygge.” Although it cannot be perfectly translated into English, the idea can be explained, in so many words, as self-inflicted relaxation and well-being in all aspects of life. Perhaps one reason why we became so enthralled with the idea is because it embodies the zeitgeist of today, comfort. This strive towards ease, in fashion particularly, is often looked down upon by older generations, as they complain that Millennials and Generation Z “don’t care how they look.” Adidas Superstar sneakers were one of the most worn footwear styles by fashion influencers in 2017, we often choose wider silhouettes over slimmer ones, and we have even seen an influx of more casual formal wear, such of pockets put into wedding dresses. As a member of the first year of Generation Z, I starkly disagree with this disapproving outlook of older generations. Perhaps this zeitgeist is a coping mechanism in reaction to the harsh political climate, a “comfort food” of sorts, or maybe it is proof of our understanding of “fashion” expanding to be more inclusive. Regardless, this focus on relaxation is here to stay, and we no longer feel the need to choose between comfort and style.”
